Mexico City, Sep 20 (NationPress) Mexican officials announced that the funds generated from a special National Lottery draw on September 15 will be allocated to enhance protective measures for at-risk Mexican migrants, especially those residing in the United States.
Olivia Salomon, the head of the National Lottery, stated that the draw amassed sales totaling 338.5 million pesos (approximately 18.4 million USD), yielding net earnings of 115.9 million pesos after accounting for prize distributions, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
Juan Ramon de la Fuente, the Foreign Minister, indicated that these funds will support six initiatives aimed at enhancing Mexico's consulates and improving legal, humanitarian, and emergency assistance. The initiatives include legal representation, visits to detention facilities, increasing consular staff in high-demand areas, and responding to natural disasters.
De la Fuente emphasized, "These actions will be executed with transparency, featuring quarterly assessments and public disclosures."
President Claudia Sheinbaum remarked, "Our foremost priority is to secure bail for our compatriots, which is often a financial burden for them."
Earlier this month, the Mexican government officially participated in the National Lottery's special draw titled “Mexico with an M for Migrant”, which occurred on September 15 at 4 p.m.
This initiative honors Mexican migrants who support their families and communities from overseas, with a single ticket providing a chance to win up to MXN25.5 million ($1.42 million).
The director general of the National Lottery noted that President Sheinbaum has allocated the funds raised from the draw, post-prize distribution, to bolster consular support and protection for Mexicans abroad during uncertain times.
