Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 19 (NationPress) The President of Assam Mahila Congress, Mira Borthakur, delivered a scathing critique of former Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhupen Kumar Borah on Thursday, labeling him a “betrayer” and an “opportunist” in light of his resignation from the party and his anticipated transition to the BJP.
Expressing her disapproval of Borah’s departure, Borthakur stated that a leader who had stood alongside the Congress for numerous years has now deserted the party for self-serving political ambitions.
“Just recently, we were united in our fight for the party. Today, he has opted for a different route. Such behavior can only be characterized as betrayal,” she remarked, indirectly referencing Borah.
Borthakur also made a heartfelt pledge of allegiance to the Congress, emphasizing that she would never, under any circumstances, join the BJP.
“I will never join the BJP. Even if my survival depends on selling 'ghuguni' on the streets, I will not alter my beliefs,” she affirmed, reinforcing her commitment to the Congress and its principles.
In response, Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed claimed that Borah’s resignation would not impact the party, characterizing Congress as a “vast ocean” that remains unaffected by individual departures.
“The Congress is an ocean. Even if one stream flows out, the ocean remains unchanged. Bhupen Borah’s exit will not influence the party in any manner,” he told reporters.
Ahmed expressed confidence that Congress will secure the next government in Assam, asserting that the “ocean of Congress” will prevail in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
He further stated that the party is poised to regain power under the guidance of Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha.
“This time, Congress will establish the government in Assam under Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership,” the MLA confidently asserted.
Borah, who held the position of APCC President during a pivotal time for the party, including the last Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, resigned from Congress earlier this week, inciting considerable political speculation.
His departure is perceived as a significant setback for the opposition party, which has already been facing internal challenges and a wave of defections in recent years.
Adding further political importance to this event, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Borah’s residence a few days ago, intensifying speculation surrounding his imminent shift to the BJP.
The Chief Minister later confirmed that Borah is slated to officially join the ruling party on February 22, a move that could bolster the BJP’s organizational strength ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
