Gujarat's 'Miracle Boy' Achieves Unprecedented Success in Dairy Artificial Insemination
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Surat, March 3 (NationPress) A technician specializing in livestock artificial insemination from Vaheval village in Gujarat's Surat district has achieved a remarkably high success rate for conception, thereby enhancing both reproductive efficiency and milk production in local dairy cattle.
Deepak Patel, 63, who completed his education up to the fifth grade, boasts an impressive 80 percent conception rate for cattle through artificial insemination, as reported by officials at the Surat District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Limited (SUMUL Dairy).
Recently, after receiving a call, he visited a farmer's residence to assess a cow, advising the owner to delay insemination for several hours since the animal wasn't at the optimal stage of heat.
“This is the right time for artificial insemination,” he informed the farmer before revisiting later that day to conduct the procedure. Such precise timing is essential to achieving the high success rate.
The average success rate for artificial insemination procedures across India is estimated to be between 35 and 40 percent.
Dr. Ajitsinh Jadve, who heads the veterinary department at SUMUL Dairy, noted that the cooperative performs approximately 500,000 artificial insemination procedures each year in Surat and Tapi districts, with an overall success rate of around 53 percent.
He remarked, "Patel’s individual success rate is exceptionally high, leading to an increase in productive dairy animals and enhanced milk output for farmers in his community.”
According to statistics mentioned in a book authored by Dr. P. R. Pandya, the former managing director of SUMUL Dairy, the average milk production from a crossbred cow in India is about 7.4 liters, while in Gujarat, it's around 8.05 liters.
In the Mahuva taluka, crossbred cows inseminated using Patel’s technique have been reported to yield an average of 11.3 liters of milk daily.
Since joining SUMUL Dairy in 1999, Patel has conducted over 80,000 artificial insemination procedures, consistently achieving high success rates, as noted by his colleagues.
Dr. Pandya highlighted that the cooperative recognized Patel's exceptional skills early on, attributing significant improvements in farmers’ incomes and livestock quality in Mahuva to his efforts. Patel credits part of his success to the meticulous timing of insemination.
He has also trained his son-in-law in artificial insemination techniques, ensuring the continuation of this expertise within the local community.
An English biography titled The Miracle Boy – Dipak Patel has been co-written by Dr. Pandya and Shashwat Adhvaryu.
Additionally, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has produced a short documentary named Safal Bijdan to motivate others in the livestock breeding sector.
Patel has also received recognition from Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah for his invaluable contributions.
With India leading the globe in milk production, officials indicate that the efforts within Gujarat's dairy sector are advancing under both national and state governance.
Patel’s achievements in artificial insemination have significantly boosted livestock productivity and farmer incomes in various regions of southern Gujarat.
