Chennai, July 5 (NationPress) In a significant enhancement to passport services in rural Tamil Nadu, the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Chennai is set to send its newly introduced Mobile Passport Seva Van to Krishnagiri district for a three-day period starting on July 7.
This initiative is designed to provide passport services directly to residents, especially those in remote and underserved regions.
As per the announcement from the Passport Office, the mobile van will facilitate 30 appointments daily, which can be conveniently booked online through a drop-down option available on the official Passport Seva website.
This service is in addition to the 40 daily appointments currently managed by the post office in Krishnagiri.
The mobile van represents a part of a broader citizen-centric initiative aimed at extending government services to the most remote areas.
Officially launched in Chennai on June 16 by K.J. Srinivasa, the Chief Passport Officer of the Ministry of External Affairs, this program reflects the government's commitment to accessibility.
The RPO in Chennai has been a leader in digital advancements in passport services, having been the first passport office in South India to start issuing e-passports in March of this year.
To date, over 1.2 lakh e-passports have been issued. These next-generation passports feature an RFID chip and antenna that securely store personal and biometric data, significantly enhancing security and reducing forgery.
Officials confirm that all passports currently issued by the Chennai RPO are now e-passports, with the office processing around 2,500 applications each day.
Additionally, the RPO has revealed plans to enhance its physical infrastructure, with a new Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) anticipated to open soon in Perambur, North Chennai.
In line with a broader policy decision, the Ministry of External Affairs has committed to establishing at least one passport office in each parliamentary constituency nationwide.
The Mobile Passport Seva Van initiative highlights the government’s dedication to improving accessibility and convenience for citizens, particularly those in rural and semi-urban zones.
