Udupi (Karnataka), Nov 27 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to receive a traditional welcome at the historic Udupi Sri Krishna Math during his visit on November 28. He will engage in the 'Laksha Kantha Gita' mass-chanting event in Udupi.
According to Paryaya Puttige Mutt seer Sugunendra Tirtha Swami, the Prime Minister will be warmly welcomed at the temple on Friday morning. He will visit Madhwa Sarovara, offer his prayers to the deity, and conduct a special puja. Following this, he will attend the gathering where more than 100,000 devotees will chant verses from the Bhagavad Gita.
Additionally, the Prime Minister will unveil the “Kanaka Kavacha” (golden covering) for the divine “Kanakana Kindi” at the mutt.
The Udupi Kanakana Kindi story dates back to the 16th century when poet-saint Kanakadasa was denied entry to the temple due to his low caste. His fervent devotion caused the Lord Krishna idol to miraculously turn to face him, creating a crack in the wall through which he could see the deity. This spot later became known as Kanakana Kindi.
Seer Sugunendra Tirtha Swami remarked that the mutt will present Suwarna Thirta Mantapa to the deity through PM Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister is also expected to visit Sarvagnya Peeta, the goshala, and the new Gita Mandira. He has expressed interest in sampling local delicacies, including ‘patrode’.
Devotees will initiate the recitation of Bhagavad Gita shlokas at 9 a.m. Upon the Prime Minister's arrival, they will recite verses from Chapter 15 -- Purushottama Yoga -- followed by the last ten verses of the final chapter. Participants from across the nation and around the globe will join the recitation online. Attendees will also be provided with food. All poojas at the Krishna Mutt will conclude by 8 a.m. on Friday.
An official statement indicated: "The sacred town of Udupi is preparing for a momentous spiritual and cultural event on November 28, 2025. PM Narendra Modi will visit the historic Udupi Sri Krishna Math and take part in the ‘Laksha Kantha Gita’ program, where a hundred thousand people will chant verses from the Bhagavad Gita together.
“This visit embodies devotion, tradition, and massive public engagement, highlighting India’s enduring civilization and the timeless messages of the Gita. PM Modi will receive a traditional welcome from the Paryaya seer of Puttige Math and other esteemed dignitaries. In the sacred sanctum of the eight-century-old temple, revered globally, he will offer special prayers and have darshan," the statement furthered.
“After the temple visit, PM Modi will join the historic Gita chanting event, where over 100,000 individuals -- including students, monks, and scholars -- will recite the Bhagavad Gita in unison. He is also expected to address the gathering.
“Paryaya Puttige Math seer Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji, continuing the legacy of Madhvacharya, has proclaimed his fourth Paryaya as the 'Vishwa Gita Paryaya' and has launched numerous significant initiatives to involve global devotees. These include the 'Akhanda Udayastamana Gita Parayana', which involves continuous chanting of the Gita from sunrise to sunset for two years, and the 'Koti Gita Lekhana Yajna', a large-scale initiative where devotees worldwide learn, write, and dedicate verses of the Gita to the lotus feet of Lord Krishna.
“The Laksha Kantha Gita Parayana program has been magnificently organized by Paryaya Puttige Sri Krishna Math. This grand event aims to motivate society to embrace the principles of dharma, compassion, and courage as imparted in the Gita, while standing as a profound symbol of India’s unity and collective devotion. Devotees are eagerly anticipating the Gita chanting and the opportunity to glimpse the Prime Minister. Local authorities have ensured all preparations are in place for smooth public access and the successful execution of the program,” the release concluded.
On November 28, 2025, public entry to the Sri Krishna Math will be limited from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Math administration has requested devotees to cooperate during darshan hours and adhere to the revised schedule.
