Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, 3 June, congratulated Mette Frederiksen on assuming office as Denmark's Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, calling it a 'remarkable' milestone and signalling deeper engagement under the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership. The message, posted on social media platform X from New Delhi, comes days after Frederiksen formed a new four-party coalition government following the longest government-formation process in Danish history.

In his X post, the Prime Minister wrote, ‘Congratulations to my friend Ms. Mette Frederiksen on assuming office as the Prime Minister of Denmark for a remarkable third consecutive term. India and Denmark share an enduring partnership founded on mutual trust, shared values, and a common commitment to a sustainable future.'

Modi added that he looked forward to working with Frederiksen to ‘further strengthen the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership and take our cooperation to new heights for the benefit of our peoples.'

Denmark's record-long coalition talks

Frederiksen confirmed on Monday that she had stitched together a new four-party government after a 69-day coalition-building process — the longest in Denmark's history. The new cabinet brings together the Social Democrats, the Socialist People's Party, the Social Liberal Party, and the Moderates.

Speaking after meeting King Frederik X, Frederiksen described the negotiations as ‘long and difficult,' noting that although ‘a lot has been difficult,' the process ultimately ‘had to succeed.' Denmark went to the polls on 24 March; while the Social Democrats remained the largest party, they suffered significant losses, leaving neither the left- nor right-leaning blocs with a parliamentary majority, according to reports.

The Oslo backdrop

The congratulatory note builds on an in-person meeting between the two leaders last month in Oslo, on the sidelines of the third India-Nordic Summit. Modi had then flagged expanding cooperation in water resources, clean energy, shipping, food processing, and emerging areas like FinTech, defence, and innovation, and invited Danish pension funds to scale up investments in India.

Modi had also expressed confidence that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement would have a ‘major impact' on both economies. Frederiksen, at the joint press conference in Oslo, described India as ‘one of the greatest powers' and said Nordic cooperation with New Delhi could deliver stability and prosperity amid global uncertainty.

With Frederiksen now politically secure for a third term, both sides are expected to push forward on the Green Strategic Partnership — a framework that has anchored India-Denmark ties since 2020 — alongside new tracks in defence and FinTech flagged at Oslo.
