"As the parliamentarian representing Kashi, I extend a warm welcome to all athletes who have gathered in Varanasi from different parts of the nation. Your dedication will be put to the test here in Kashi in the upcoming days. I am informed that teams from 28 states are taking part, showcasing a splendid image of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’," stated PM Modi.
In his welcome address, he mentioned that the athletes will also have the chance to immerse themselves in the rich sporting culture of Varanasi.
"You are in Varanasi now, and you will get to know our city. Varanasi is a haven for sports enthusiasts. Popular sports here include wrestling, boxing, boat racing, and kabaddi. The city has also produced numerous national-level athletes, with students from BHU, UP College, and Kashi Vidyapeeth excelling at both state and national levels," he noted.
The Prime Minister remarked that Kashi has a historical legacy of welcoming individuals from across the country seeking knowledge and artistic pursuits, expressing confidence that the vibrant spirit of the city will be palpable throughout the National Volleyball Tournament.
Pointing out the profound values associated with volleyball, PM Modi explained that the sport allows individuals to engage with India’s rich cultural heritage.
"This is not merely a sport. Volleyball exemplifies balance and teamwork. It signifies determination," he indicated.
"Volleyball fosters connections through team spirit. Each player embodies a single principle: Team First. Everyone plays for the collective, emphasizing that victories are not personal but a product of joint efforts," he added, linking this to national development.
"Our country is advancing with this same ethos. Every individual is contributing to the nation with the sentiment of ‘India First’," the Prime Minister asserted, adding that Uttar Pradesh is also playing a pivotal role in national progress with a strong sense of unity and collective ambition.
Regarding India's international standing, PM Modi noted that the country’s growth and economic advancements are being acknowledged globally, yet true progress is measured beyond mere economic metrics.
"Real development transcends economic success; it is also evident in our confidence on the sports field. We have clearly witnessed this in recent years," he stated.
"Since 2014, India’s performance across various sports has consistently improved. We feel immense pride when we see our Gen-Z athletes hoisting the tricolor on the field," he added.
The Prime Minister recalled a time when both the government and society were largely indifferent towards sports, leaving athletes uncertain about their future.
"Very few young individuals viewed sports as a viable career option. However, over the past decade, there has been a significant shift in the attitudes of both the government and society," he explained.
He highlighted the considerable increase in the sports budget and proclaimed India as an athlete-centric nation.
"Talent is being recognized, scientific training is being implemented, nutrition is being closely monitored, and transparent systems are ensuring that athletes' interests are prioritized at all levels," PM Modi stated.
Discussing policy reforms, the Prime Minister emphasized initiatives like the National Sports Governance Act and the Khelo India initiative 2025, asserting that these measures are generating improved opportunities for talented athletes nationwide.
"Today, programs like TOPS are revolutionizing India’s sports ecosystem. On one hand, we are enhancing infrastructure and funding systems, and on the other, we are ensuring that young athletes receive world-class exposure," he mentioned.
PM Modi also pointed out that India has successfully hosted major international sporting events in the last decade, including the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, the Hockey World Cup, and over 20 other significant competitions, including international chess tournaments, across various cities.
He further noted that India is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is making robust preparations to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.
"These initiatives aim to provide as many athletes as possible with greater opportunities to compete and excel on the global platform," he expressed.
Highlighting the influence of the Khelo India program, PM Modi noted that thousands of young athletes have showcased their talents at the national level.
"Recently, the SANSAD Sports Festival was organized, with nearly one crore youth participating. As the MP of Varanasi, I take pride in sharing that close to three lakh young individuals from my Kashi constituency demonstrated their abilities during this festival," he stated.
He added that enhancements in sports infrastructure are also benefiting Varanasi, with modern facilities being developed and new stadiums for various sports currently in progress.
"I am thrilled that the city is gearing up to host major events. Securing a position on the national sporting map through the National Volleyball Tournament is a significant achievement for Kashi," the Prime Minister emphasized, noting that previous events in the city have also stimulated local economic growth.
He cited instances such as G20 meetings, cultural festivals, gatherings of the Indian diaspora, and meetings of the Kashi Sangai Cooperative Organisation, asserting that these events have helped establish Varanasi as a prominent venue for large-scale programs.
"Today, this championship contributes to those accomplishments. Through all these events, Kashi is emerging as a vital hub for national and international gatherings," he concluded.
