Dehradun, Feb 22 (NationPress) The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, B.L. Verma, stated on Sunday that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, along with various welfare programs, has established a robust framework for the integration of Divyangjan into mainstream society, according to an official announcement.
In his address at the launch of the 30th edition of the Divya Kala Mela held at Rangers Ground in Dehradun, Verma revealed that Rs 375 crore has been earmarked in the current budget through the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) for acquiring and fitting assistive devices, which will significantly benefit numerous individuals with disabilities.
Pradeep A., the Director of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), noted that the Mela serves as a holistic initiative aimed at connecting Divyang entrepreneurs with markets, financing, and job prospects.
He mentioned that during the event, there will be assistive device registrations, informational stalls, and employment fairs to further enhance empowerment initiatives for Divyangjan.
Uttarakhand Governor Lt. General Gurmit Singh emphasized the significance of artificial intelligence and technological advancements in creating new opportunities for individuals with disabilities, stating that technology acts as an equalizer and is devoid of discrimination.
The Governor further underscored the necessity to promote products made at the Mela on global platforms to secure international recognition for the skills of Divyang artisans.
“With perseverance and skill, Divyangjan can excel in any domain. The Divya Kala Mela is not just an event; it is a dynamic platform that inspires and energizes, showcasing the vital role of Divyangjan in contributing to India’s economic development,” he stated.
Tehri MP Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah described the Divya Kala Mela as more than a mere exhibition, labeling it a catalyst for social change and empowerment.
She commended the Indian Government and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for granting national recognition to such initiatives and bringing the event to Uttarakhand.
Referring to India’s accomplishments in the Paralympics, she stated that the talent among Divyangjan continues to bring honor to the nation and illustrates that opportunities and support can lead to excellence.
Legislator Khajan Das praised the Mela as a commendable program that grants dignity and opportunities to Divyangjan, asserting that such platforms enhance confidence and foster social inclusion.
The 30th edition of the Divya Kala Mela in Dehradun is a significant milestone in the nationwide series of such events. To date, 29 editions held across the nation have seen participation from approximately 2,362 Divyang entrepreneurs, generating business worth over Rs 23 crore.
The government has also approved loans surpassing Rs 20 crore to support Divyang entrepreneurs, reaffirming its commitment to their financial independence. Additionally, employment fairs within this initiative have seen approximately 3,131 candidates1,007 shortlisted and more than 313 securing job offers.
