Madhya Pradesh has been placed on high security alert ahead of President Droupadi Murmu's five-day visit to the state, with her two-day stop at the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga shrine on 18–19 June prompting sweeping traffic diversions and heightened police vigilance across districts. The visit, which includes an official event marking World Sickle Cell Day, is among the most significant presidential engagements in the state in recent years.

Security Arrangements Across the State

Director General of Police Kailash Makwana has directed police officials in all districts to remain on heightened alert and ensure law and order throughout the presidential visit. The administration in Indore has already put elaborate reception arrangements in place, with ministers, public representatives, and senior officials set to receive President Murmu at Indore airport.

Notably, the official confirmation of the visit is yet to be issued by the President's secretariat, though ground-level preparations are well underway.

Itinerary: Prayers at Omkareshwar, World Sickle Cell Day Event

President Murmu is scheduled to arrive at Omkareshwar via Indore on 18 June, where she will offer prayers and seek darshan at the revered Jyotirlinga shrine. On 19 June, an official programme will be held to observe World Sickle Cell Day — a cause the President has championed given her tribal background and the disease's prevalence in tribal communities. Her mode of travel from Indore to Omkareshwar — by helicopter or road — is yet to be finalised, reportedly depending on prevailing weather conditions.

Major Traffic Diversions in Omkareshwar Region

Traffic arrangements in and around Omkareshwar will undergo significant changes from 17 June until 12 pm on 19 June. Vehicles travelling from Indore to Khandwa will be redirected via three alternative routes: Mhow–Manpur–Dhamnod–Khargone, Simrol–Mandleshwar–Kasrawad–Khargone, or Barwaha–Mandleshwar–Kasrawad–Khargone.

Traffic moving from Khandwa towards Indore will proceed via Bhikangaon–Khargone–Kasrawad, while vehicles from Mandleshwar will use the Kasrawad–Khalghat route. Small vehicles arriving from Indore will be directed to park at Trenching Ground and Tamrakar Parking via Barwaha–Mortakka–Sanawad, from where devotees can proceed on foot for darshan and the holy dip. Buses from both Indore and Khandwa will park at Mortakka, and a section of road will be temporarily declared a no-vehicle zone when the presidential convoy passes.

Administration Appeals for Public Cooperation

Khandwa District Magistrate Rishav Gupta appealed to devotees for patience, saying: 'The President's visit is scheduled for June 18 and 19 at Omkareshwar. On June 18, she will offer prayers at the Jyotirlinga. There may be some inconvenience to the public during this period, and we request everyone's support.'

The local administration has stated that arrangements have been designed to minimise disruption to pilgrims and the general public while ensuring the visit proceeds without incident. All eyes are now on the President's secretariat for the formal announcement, expected shortly before the visit commences.
