Mumbai, Aug 18 (NationPress) The historic sword belonging to Shrimant Raje Raghuji Bhonsle has made its way to Mumbai, receiving a magnificent welcome from the Government of Maharashtra at the Mumbai International Airport.
This evening, a formal unveiling of the sword will take place, featuring the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
This sword stands out for various reasons. Unlike most medieval Maratha weapons, which often lacked decorative features or any markings of their owners, this sword is a rare exception, showcasing intricate designs along with the owner's name. The presence of its European-made blade highlights the vibrant international arms trade that flourished in 18th-century India.
The historic sword was recently acquired by the Government of Maharashtra through an auction.
Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar received the sword in London and officially brought it back at the international airport.
The Departments of Cultural Affairs, Archaeology and Museums, and the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, together with PL Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy, have organized the ‘Sena Saheb Subha Parakram Darshan’ ceremony at 6 p.m., as announced by Minister Shelar’s office.
During this event, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the exhibition showcasing the historic sword.
Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with Minister for Cultural Affairs and IT and Guardian Minister of Suburban District Ashish Shelar, will also be in attendance.
Shrimant Mudhoji Raje Bhonsle, a descendant of Shrimant Raje Raghuji Bhonsle, will also honor the occasion with his presence. The event will also see attendance from Dr Kiran Kulkarni, Secretary of the Department of Cultural Affairs, local MP Anil Desai, and MLA Mahesh Sawant, among others.
An exhibition featuring the legendary sword of Shrimant Sena Saheb Subha Raghuji Raje Bhonsle, brought from England, will be held from August 19 to August 25, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Art Gallery of PL Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy in Prabhadevi, Mumbai. The exhibition will be free for all.
Raghuji Bhosale I (1695 - 14 February 1755) was the founder of the Nagpur Bhosale dynasty and a significant commander in the Maratha Army during the reign of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj.
Recognized as one of the boldest Maratha commanders in the 18th century, Raghuji Bhosale’s Nagpur kingdom was rich in iron and copper deposits, which were used not only for manufacturing goods but also for forging weapons. The royal weaponry of the Nagpur Bhosales was a fine blend of craftsmanship and elegance.
