New Delhi, April 28 (NationPress) Significant documentation related to fugitive diamond traders Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi is feared to be among the investigation materials damaged during a fire incident at the ED's office in south Mumbai. However, an official reassured on Monday that ongoing investigations will remain unaffected as digital records are intact.

The fire brigade spent over 10 hours extinguishing the flames that erupted on the 4th floor of the Mumbai Zonal Office-I, Enforcement Directorate (ED) situated in the Kaiser-I-Hind building at Ballard Estate, as confirmed by an official.

The blaze was first noticed around 2:25 a.m. on Sunday by security personnel who promptly alerted the police and fire brigade, the official stated.

Addressing concerns about potential setbacks in investigations due to document loss in the fire, an ED official affirmed, “Evidence-related documents and those essential for the investigation are consistently stored in digital format, as well as within our internal centralized record system.”

“For cases where Prosecution Complaints have been lodged, original records are preserved with the respective courts. Therefore, we do not anticipate any hindrance in investigations or trials,” he elaborated.

Insiders suggested that the charred documents may pertain to money laundering cases linked to significant individuals including Choksi, Nirav Modi, Anil Deshmukh, and Chhagan Bhujbal.

Furthermore, sources indicated that the fire could mildly affect the summoning process for witnesses in various cases.

An ED official reported, “The fire brigade commenced operations around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, deploying over 50 personnel and several fire engines. Initially, the fire seems to have been caused by an electrical short-circuit in the power boxes located on the 4th floor of the building.”

The offices on the ground and first floors of the Kaiser-I-Hind building are operational, and the affected section on the 4th floor has been promptly relocated to the Old Regional Office at Janambhoomi Chambers, as stated by the official.

In March, the State Government designated land at Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai for the ED to construct dedicated offices.

“We are expediting the procedural requirements to establish independent offices for the ED as soon as possible,” he added.
