Mumbai, May 5 (NationPress) The battle for the top position in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 resembles a game of musical chairs. With a fiercely competitive race for playoff spots, the rankings have seen frequent shifts, with Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Mumbai Indians all having claimed the top position at various points.
Last week, Mumbai Indians were leading the standings but were recently surpassed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, followed by Punjab Kings climbing to second place.
As Mumbai Indians prepare to face the Gujarat Titans in their upcoming match, they run the risk of slipping further down the standings. However, a victory would allow them to reclaim the top spot from Royal Challengers Bengaluru based on a superior net run rate. Despite the frustrating nature of these constant changes, head coach Mahela Jayawardene emphasized his lack of concern regarding the fluctuating points table.
According to Jayawardene, these shifts are beyond their control, as the standings are continuously evolving due to the tight playoff race.
“Of course, the number of matches played and how that affects the standings will always result in change, particularly with Punjab Kings having an uneven number of games due to a rain-off match,” he stated.
“Thus, factors that we as a franchise cannot influence, nor can I as a coach, lead me to concentrate on our game tomorrow and then the next. We have three crucial matches ahead, which is promising for us.”
“We aim to continue playing good cricket. The team is focused on that, and the aspects I cannot control will not distract me,” Jayawardene added during the pre-match media interaction.
Additionally, the Mumbai Indians' coach confirmed that pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, who missed several matches due to injury, has completely recovered and is regaining his form.
“When we assembled the team, we recognized his immense value, and we were aware he would be unavailable for the initial games, but his recovery has been impressive,” Jayawardene noted.
“It didn’t take him long to find his rhythm, which is a great sign. Jasprit possesses significant control and confidence in his approach, adding a unique element to our bowling attack, which has positively impacted the entire team in the last few matches,” he remarked.
While Jayawardene acknowledged the advantage of playing two out of their last three league games at home in Wankhede, he remains focused solely on the immediate match.
“I haven’t considered future matches yet. Upon reviewing the schedule, I realized that ending with two home games out of three was advantageous. We started our campaign away, so we anticipated this might play a role, and it has,” he explained.
“But I’m not contemplating the playoffs. There are five or six teams vying for spots, with various possible outcomes. I won’t delve into that now. We’ll see how things unfold in the next five or six days when each team plays one more round, allowing us to assess our strategies accordingly,” Jayawardene concluded.
