Mumbai, May 20 (NationPress) Following a challenging beginning to the Indian Premier League (IPL), the renowned five-time champions Mumbai Indians are at a critical juncture. A victory at their home ground would secure them the coveted fourth and final playoff spot.
In anticipation of the pivotal match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, Mumbai Indians' head coach Mahela Jayawardene conveyed a vital message to his team: focus on what they can control, adhere to their established routines, follow their processes, and execute their game plan effectively.
Currently, Mumbai holds the fourth position with 14 points, while Delhi Capitals trail closely with 13 points. Both teams have one remaining match, but a win for Mumbai on Wednesday would guarantee their spot in the playoffs and extinguish Delhi's hopes. Delhi requires victories in both of their remaining games to qualify. Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already secured their playoff positions.
On the eve of the highly anticipated match at Wankhede Stadium, Jayawardene emphasized the importance of concentrating solely on controllable factors and not letting outside influences affect their performance. He stated that delivering their best on the field is entirely within their control.
"My message to the players is to ensure we stick to our routines, processes, training methods, and the plans we've developed for this tournament," Jayawardene expressed.
"I'm pleased with the intensity displayed by the team and their reactions to various situations. We simply need to maintain this approach. It’s straightforward. I’m not looking too far ahead; we’ve had a productive week of preparation and have analyzed other teams’ performances as well. We just need to go out there and showcase our skills, playing a solid game of cricket," he added during the pre-match conference on Tuesday.
Jayawardene reiterated that Mumbai Indians have always been in contention for a playoff spot.
"Certainly, we have to wait for outcomes, but we've consistently been in the playoff race since our impressive run of six consecutive wins. It’s essential to commence the tournament and play well. The team has been eager for this, training has been excellent, and we will continue to focus on one game at a time, assessing our needs as we move forward," he said.
Mumbai must secure a victory on Wednesday to raise their total to 16 points and confirm their place in the next stage. If they lose, they would rely on defeating Punjab Kings in their final league match while hoping that PBKS also defeats Delhi Capitals to keep their playoff hopes alive.
However, Jayawardene expressed his preference to resolve the playoff situation on Wednesday instead of depending on others.
"As I mentioned earlier, it’s preferable to maintain control over our destiny rather than relying on others. We aim to play well enough to earn that position and will strive to deliver our best performance tomorrow," he said.
The head coach also confirmed that Will Jacks from England, along with South African players Corbin Bosch and Ryan Rickelton, are available for selection for Wednesday's match before departing to represent their national teams.
"We have received timelines from the respective boards. Until then, they remain available," he stated, noting that Will Jacks will leave after the league stage, while the South African players are expected to depart post-May 26.
