Mumbai Initiates Innovative Tech-Driven Tree Health Audit in Suburban Wards
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 16 (NationPress) On Monday, Ashish Shelar, the Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban District, unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing environmental conservation and tree preservation in the city. This pilot project will conduct a thorough evaluation of all trees using cutting-edge technology in the R-Central and H-West Wards.
Shelar addressed attendees at a significant meeting focused on tree conservation.
A detailed digital mapping system will be created to assess the health and manage the trees across Mumbai’s suburban regions.
This innovative approach will leverage advanced technology to provide comprehensive data regarding the age, species, health status, growth patterns, pruning requirements, and environmental contributions of trees in these wards.
As part of this initiative, LiDAR technology will be employed for 3D imaging, generating precise digital records of each tree. A unique digital identifier will be assigned to every tree, compiling information on growth trends, carbon capture ability, pollution mitigation, rainwater management, and various ecological benefits.
To assess the internal condition of trees, sophisticated instruments like Resistographs will be utilized, enabling the detection of internal decay, voids, or structural issues without the need to cut into the tree.
This technology will facilitate rapid evaluations to determine whether a tree is secure or poses a danger.
He noted that existing tree assessments in Mumbai are largely manual, often overlooking internal damage, which can result in unforeseen tree collapses.
The proposed digital framework will allow for in-depth analyses of such occurrences, enabling the identification of root causes and even ascertaining if any trees have been intentionally harmed.
An integrated system will be established for digital surveying, health evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and incident analysis pertaining to trees.
The pilot project will commence in the R-Central and H-West Wards, supported by the District Development Fund.
