Mumbai Metro Lines 7 and 2A Approved for Full-Speed Operations

Mumbai, Jan 11 (NationPress) In a significant achievement for the Mumbai metro system, the Chief Commissioner of Rail Safety (CCRS) has issued safety certification for the regular authorization of Mumbai Metro Line 7 (Red Line) and Metro Line 2A (Yellow Line).
This milestone signifies successful compliance with all requirements established during provisional authorization, allowing for unrestricted operations at a maximum speed of 80 kmph, an increase from the prior temporary speed limit of 50 to 60 kmph at select locations.
Both lines, managed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), are essential for alleviating congestion on some of Mumbai's busiest routes. Metro Line 2A extends 18.6 km from Dahisar to DN Nagar and includes 17 stations, while Metro Line 7 runs 16.5 km from Andheri (E) to Dahisar (E) with 13 stations. Collectively, they accommodate over 2.5 lakh daily passengers, with a total ridership surpassing 15 crore since their inception.
The MMRDA's initiatives to deploy cutting-edge technology—including driverless-capable trainsets, Communications-based train control (CBTC) signaling, platform screen doors, and modern ticketing systems—are designed to offer Mumbai a safe, environmentally friendly, and efficient metro service.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remarked: "The regular authorization for Metro Lines 7 and 2A is a significant step toward transforming Mumbai into a world-class city with an effective transportation network. This accomplishment reflects our government's dedication to providing sustainable, time-efficient, and eco-friendly mobility solutions for Mumbaikars. Through this progress, we are fulfilling our pledge to establish Mumbai’s public transport system as the cornerstone of its development."
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde noted: "The expansion of Mumbai's metro is revolutionary for the city, and the regular authorization of Metro Lines 7 and 2A underscores MMRDA's commitment to its vision. This will greatly diminish congestion on vital routes and enhance the commuting experience. We are steadfast in our commitment to further expand Mumbai's metro network to cater to the needs of our ever-growing metropolis."
Metropolitan Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee stated: "This achievement highlights MMRDA's unwavering commitment to uphold the highest safety standards and operational excellence. The lifting of speed restrictions and the safety certification from CCRS will significantly enhance the metro travel experience."
