Mumbai, Aug 4 (NationPress) — The remarkable urban mobility journey of Mumbai has hit a significant milestone: 200 million passenger rides on the Maha Mumbai Metro network within a mere 39 months. Since its launch, the Maha Mumbai Metro has seen steady growth in commuter trust and ridership, as highlighted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in a recent statement.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis commented, “The achievement of Metro Line 2A (Dahisar to Andheri West) and Metro Line 7 (Dahisar to Gundavli) showcases the strength of effective execution and community-focused planning. Infrastructure is essential for Maharashtra’s progress. The 200 million ridership milestone demonstrates that Mumbaikars have accepted the Metro as their reliable travel partner. Our administration is dedicated to further expanding this network to enhance convenience, connectivity, and improve air quality across this vast city.”
In detailing the growth of these two metro lines, MMRDA noted: “On April 2, 2022, 19,451 passengers utilized the service in a single day; by January 27, 2023, the total reached 10 million; on May 28, 2024, it hit 100 million; by January 4, 2025, 150 million journeys had been made, with a record of over 300,000 passengers on July 8, 2025. By August 2025, the total surpassed 200 million and continues to rise. The Metro has become an integral part of the city, aiding commuters in avoiding traffic while providing students and senior citizens with a safe, climate-controlled environment, effectively linking suburbs, alleviating road congestion, and reducing commute times by more than half.”
MMRDA also pointed out that the Metro has significantly cut travel times for millions, provided secure, air-conditioned, and efficient travel options, reduced vehicular traffic and emissions, and connected remote suburbs to the core of the city.
This achievement also underscores the environmental benefits — every Metro journey contributes to minimizing the number of private vehicles on the streets, decreasing congestion, and lowering carbon emissions. With over 300,000 commuters utilizing Metro Lines 2A and 7 on a daily basis, the transition toward mass rapid transit is both evident and significant.
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde stated: “The success of the Maha Mumbai Metro is a testament to effective execution and community-centric planning. This is not merely a mobility success; it represents a transformation in quality of life. With each Metro ride, we progress towards our vision of a connected Mumbai where no citizen is overlooked.”
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee remarked: “Surpassing 200 million passenger journeys is more than just a number; it symbolizes a city evolving through public demands and strategic vision. A steady monthly growth of 4–5 percent in ridership indicates that Mumbaikars are increasingly opting for smarter travel alternatives. This milestone belongs to every passenger who has chosen the Metro over traffic and pollution. Together, we are crafting a future-ready Mumbai.”
The managing director of Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd, Rubal Agarwal, stated: “This achievement is the product of seamless collaboration, dedicated teams, and, importantly, the trust of our citizens. Our operational teams work tirelessly to ensure safety, cleanliness, and efficiency. We are now focusing on the next phase — improving service frequency, introducing digital ticketing solutions, and ensuring last-mile connectivity.”
