Jabalpur, July 7 (NationPress) The mysterious death of a murder suspect in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur district has sparked significant controversy, prompting the police to launch an independent investigation into the incident.
The deceased, identified as Lochan Lodhi, reportedly ingested poison on the grounds of the Belkheda police station and succumbed to his condition at a government hospital late Saturday night.
Lochan was one of two individuals suspected in the alleged murder of a woman found hanging from a tree in Belkhedi village on July 1.
This woman had been missing since June 29, with a missing persons report filed on that same day. Following Lochan's death, his relatives protested by placing his body outside the Belkhedi police station, accusing the police of inflicting severe torture that drove him to take his own life.
Lochan's brother, Roop Singh, addressed the media, stating, "The police summoned Lochan for questioning regarding a murder case, and he was subjected to extreme brutality at the station. He consumed poison as a result of the police's actions. We demand a thorough independent investigation into this matter."
In response to these allegations, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Suryakant Sharma mentioned that preliminary findings indicated Lochan ingested poison beneath a tree at the police station before alerting the authorities.
"Lochan was promptly rushed to Narmada Hospital for medical attention; however, he passed away late Sunday. His family has accused certain villagers of assaulting him. We are actively investigating this claim," Sharma informed IANS.
Further details reveal that on June 29, a man named Brijesh Lodhi reported to the Belkhedi police that his mother had failed to return home after going to harvest Udad on June 28.
During investigations, it became apparent that Lochan Lodhi and Pradeep Thakur had a history of harassing her.
Additionally, it was discovered that a Grampanchayat meeting had been convened regarding this issue.
"Lochan was summoned to the police station for questioning on July 5, after which he was released by the police. On July 6, he returned and ingested poison, subsequently informing the police. The police team swiftly transported him to Narmada Hospital, where he ultimately died during treatment," Sharma added.
ACP Sharma further stated that the investigation is ongoing, and appropriate actions will be taken as needed.
