Ranchi, Sep 30 (NationPress) A 25-year-old individual, identified as Rahul Manjhi from Meral village, tragically passed away under mysterious circumstances in the lockup of Murhu police station, located in Khunti district, Jharkhand, on Tuesday morning, according to officials.
Police reports indicate that Manjhi allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the lockup's toilet.
He was taken into custody late Monday night following accusations from villagers regarding his inappropriate behavior towards a minor girl in Mahil village.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that Manjhi was in the village with his son when a dispute erupted during breakfast.
Local residents accused him of misbehaving with a girl, which sparked chaos. Although Manjhi initially escaped to his home village, villagers from Mahil pursued him, forcibly returning him to the police.
Superintendent of Police Manish Toppo confirmed that a molestation case was filed based on the villagers' allegations. He stated that Manjhi was held overnight in the police lockup. "On Tuesday morning, he was found deceased, apparently having hanged himself in the toilet. An investigation is currently in progress," Toppo remarked.
Following the incident, senior police officials arrived at the station to launch an inquiry.
The body has been dispatched for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
Manjhi's family has raised concerns about potential foul play and is demanding a thorough and transparent investigation.
They stated, "We seek the truth. He was in police custody; how could something like this occur?" a relative remarked.
Authorities assured that all possibilities, including potential negligence by officers on duty, will be meticulously examined.
