Chennai, Sep 22 (NationPress) The renowned Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore is poised for a significant transformation, with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) unveiling a redevelopment initiative costing Rs 12.22 crore under the ‘Namakku Naame’ scheme.

This initiative seeks to modernize one of the city’s most cherished green areas while safeguarding its cultural and community importance. The redevelopment strategy encompasses the establishment of dedicated reading zones, renovated gazebos, and fully equipped badminton courts.

Persistent challenges such as uneven walking paths, non-functional lighting, and crumbling boundary walls will be tackled in the initial phase. Following these fundamental enhancements, new features like fountains, shaded seating spaces, and a redesigned entrance arch will be introduced.

To improve visitor experience and ensure safety, the park will incorporate CCTV surveillance, RO water facilities, and a modern sprinkler system for maintaining greenery. The design emphasizes inclusivity, with amenities catering to children, elderly individuals, and regular walkers.

The redevelopment plan was finalized after a geotechnical survey, which integrated feedback from local stakeholders.

Recommendations for improved sanitation, upgraded toilets, and a more robust drainage system have been included in the proposal.

Nageswara Rao Park has long been a vital part of the cultural identity of Mylapore, historically serving as a center for art and music, especially during the Margazhi season. With the planned enhancements, GCC aims to rejuvenate this role while positioning the park as a contemporary recreational area for the city’s expanding populace.

Officials indicated that the project is anticipated to conclude by February 2026, ensuring the renovated park will be ready before the upcoming state Assembly elections. However, the park will undergo intermittent closures during the construction phase, particularly when trail renovations and civil improvements are being conducted.

Authorities have assured that efforts will be made to minimize disruptions for regular visitors. Upon completion, the redeveloped park will blend tradition with modernity, serving as both a cultural venue and a recreational haven.
