Ahmedabad, Oct 7 (NationPress) A Special NDPS Court in Gujarat has handed down a 15-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to a drug trafficker following a comprehensive investigation by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). This case stems from the seizure of 143 grams of Mephedrone (MD) and Methaphetamine from a vehicle in Ahmedabad in 2022, as reported by an official on Tuesday.
The Special Court convicted Samir Jamilbhai Sheikh to 15 years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI), accompanied by a fine of Rs 2 lakh, on Monday under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, due to his participation in this serious crime against society, the official stated.
This case relates to a seizure that occurred on September 3, 2022, when, acting on specific intelligence, NCB officers from the Ahmedabad Zonal Unit confiscated 143 grams of Mephedrone (MD) and Methaphetamine from a vehicle at Shah Alam Dargah, Ahmedabad, leading to Sheikh's arrest.
A formal complaint regarding the matter was filed before the NDPS Court in Ahmedabad City in March 2023.
On Monday, the Court emphasized the NCB’s unwavering commitment to combating drug-related crimes, resulting in Sheikh's conviction.
A statement from the NCB declared, “This conviction serves as a clear and powerful indication that drug trafficking will not be tolerated. The thorough investigation and dedicated prosecution by the NCB team have ensured that this drug trafficker has been brought to justice, safeguarding our community from the dangers of substance abuse.”
The official further stated that the NCB remains committed to dismantling drug networks and achieving the vision of a Drug-Free India (Nasha Mukt Bharat) through diligent investigation and prosecution of cases.
The conviction in the Ahmedabad case aligns with NCB’s recent achievement in securing 12 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 1 lakh fine for a drug trafficker in Bareilly.
A Special NDPS Court in Bareilly also sentenced a drug trafficker in an opium recovery case, as per an official.
The NCB Lucknow Zonal Unit, acting on specific intelligence, apprehended Satish Kumar while he was in possession of 4 kg of opium in Bareilly on March 2, 2024, according to an official statement.
The Special Judge (NDPS) in Bareilly, on September 26, sentenced Satish Kumar after convicting him under Sections 08/18/29 of the NDPS Act, 1985, as stated by the official.
The Lucknow Zonal Unit official of the NCB mentioned that following Satish Kumar’s arrest, an extensive investigation was carried out, and a formal complaint was filed before the court on August 17, 2024. The trial included the examination of five prosecution witnesses, culminating in the conviction.
