New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) A delegation from the National Confederation of OBC (NCOBC) Employees' Welfare Associations met with Congress MP and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi in the national capital on Thursday.

During the discussions, the NCOBC members informed the LoP about the issues and obstacles encountered by approximately 30,000 OBC workers in Central government roles and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

The NCOBC underscored the difficulties of representation and acknowledgment that OBC employees face within the public sector and PSUs, seeking his support in resolving these matters and challenges.

This meeting comes in the context of Rahul Gandhi's ongoing claims regarding the need to restructure public representation in Indian democracy and its various institutions based on the population dynamics and the strength of specific communities.

Recently, the Telangana Assembly passed two bills aimed at increasing reservations for OBCs in education, employment, and local governance to 42 percent, fulfilling a significant campaign commitment based on the outcomes of a recent caste survey.

This initiative has sparked criticism as it exceeds the previously established limit of 50 percent for caste-based reservations, a guideline upheld by the courts on numerous occasions.

Nonetheless, Rahul Gandhi praised the move, expressing that the Congress-led government in Telangana is delivering on its promise to enhance OBC reservations within the state.

"The actual demographic of the OBC community determined through a scientific caste count has been recognized, and a bill for 42 percent reservation has been passed in the Assembly to ensure their equal involvement in education, employment, and politics. This marks a truly revolutionary step towards social justice, dismantling the barrier of 50 percent reservation within the state," stated the Congress MP in a post on X.

"By examining the social and economic statuses of each community using caste survey data, policies will be crafted to ensure the welfare of all. The Telangana government has also established an independent expert group for this purpose. I have consistently asserted that only through an X-ray – i.e., caste census – can backward and underprivileged communities receive their rightful entitlements," he added.

While commending the Telangana government's development initiatives, he emphasized that the Congress government has set an example for the nation to follow.
