What Happened to the NEET Aspirant? Patna HC Disposes Father's Plea After CBI Takes Over
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 2 (NationPress) The Patna High Court convened on Monday to review a criminal writ petition submitted by the father of a NEET aspirant who tragically passed away under questionable circumstances at a girls' hostel in Patna. The court decided to dismiss the case after being informed that the Bihar government has transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Justice Arun Kumar Jha, presiding over the single Judge Bench, noted that since the case is now with the CBI, further intervention is unnecessary at this time.
The court emphasized that should any deficiencies in the CBI's investigation emerge, the petitioner has the right to return to court.
During proceedings, the Bihar government notified the court that the CBI has commenced its investigation and is anticipated to conduct a comprehensive inquiry, with a report to follow.
Previously, a request for immediate hearing was presented to Justice Arun Kumar Jha, prompting today’s proceedings.
The petition named the Principal Secretaries of the Home and Health Departments, the Director General of Police (DGP), the Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), and the Station House Officer of Chitragupta Nagar police station as respondents.
The owner of Shambhu Girls’ Hostel and three private hospitals were also included as respondents.
The father of the deceased girl, a resident of Jehanabad, sought justice through the High Court, asserting that his daughter died under suspicious conditions while preparing for the NEET examination on January 11, 2026.
In his appeal, he alleged that despite numerous attempts, no substantial action was taken to identify and hold accountable those responsible for his daughter’s demise.
He requested that the investigation should occur under the oversight of a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge, or alternatively, be transferred to an independent agency such as the CBI.
The petition was filed as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by advocate Alka Verma, who contended that the police inquiry has not yielded any definitive results, causing confusion and distrust.
The PIL also called on the High Court to rigorously enforce security standards in hostels, specifically those for women, ensuring adherence to all established regulations.
According to the petition, the student checked into Shambhu Girls’ Hostel on January 5, 2026.
She was discovered unconscious on January 6 and taken to a hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries on January 11.
Initially, authorities considered the case a suspected drug overdose; however, following the post-mortem report, the focus shifted to allegations of rape and coercion.
Nevertheless, no definitive conclusions have been reached thus far.
