What Did the Indian Ambassador Discuss with PM Oli Regarding India-Pakistan Tensions?

Kathmandu, May 9 (NationPress) The Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, engaged with Nepal's Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli in Kathmandu on Friday, providing an update on the rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the tragic Pahalgam terror incident that claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians, including a Nepali citizen, Sudeep Neupane.

“During today’s courtesy meeting, Ambassador Srivastava informed PM Oli about the current strains between India and Pakistan. In turn, PM Oli reaffirmed Nepal’s steadfast dedication to global peace,” stated the office of the Prime Minister of Nepal via X.

This meeting occurred in the wake of heightened hostilities on Thursday, as the Pakistani military attempted to strike civilian infrastructure and military bases in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, and other regions using missiles and drones, all of which were successfully intercepted by Indian forces.

Nepal expressed profound concern on Thursday regarding the escalating situation following the terrorist attack on unsuspecting tourists in Pahalgam.

This response came after the Indian military initiated Operation Sindoor, targeting nine significant terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as a counteraction to the horrific April 22 attack.

“During this tragic time, Nepal and India stood united, sharing in grief and sorrow. It is important to remember that Nepal condemned the barbaric attack promptly and unequivocally, remaining consistent in its firm opposition to all forms of terrorism,” the foreign ministry of Nepal stated.

“Nepal aligns with all efforts against terrorism. Upholding its principled stance, Nepal will not permit any hostile entities to exploit its territory against neighboring nations. Nepal aspires for a de-escalation of tensions and reaffirms its commitment to enduring peace and stability in the region,” the statement continued.

Earlier, large-scale protests occurred in Nepal, including outside the Pakistani Embassy in Kathmandu, denouncing Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in India following the atrocious Pahalgam attack.

Numerous Nepali civil society groups and political representatives, including leaders from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, took part in the demonstration against the April 22 Pahalgam terror incident, executed by four terrorists, two of whom were from Pakistan.

Protesters displayed various banners stating “Justice for Sudeep Neupane,” chanting slogans against Pakistan and striking the image of Pakistani Army General Asim Munir with shoes and slippers.

In the wake of the attack, Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli also contacted PM Narendra Modi to vehemently denounce the lethal incident in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district, expressing condolences for the loss of innocent lives.

Oli characterized the attack in Jammu and Kashmir as “heinous” and engaged in detailed discussions with PM Modi regarding the matter.
