Calcutta High Court Establishes New Bench for RG Kar Rape and Murder Case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 19 (NationPress) A newly formed bench at the Calcutta High Court has been established to deliberate on the heinous rape and murder case involving a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, which occurred in August 2024.
This bench consists of Justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Rai Chattopadhayay.
The formation of this new bench follows the recusal of the previous division bench, which included Justices Debangshu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi, who stepped back as they were no longer handling criminal cases.
Initially, the prior bench was assigned to this case by former Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, as they were managing criminal matters at that time. Once Justices Basak and Rashidi recused themselves, the case was redirected to current Chief Justice Sujoy Paul.
Ultimately, on Friday, Chief Justice Paul assigned this case to the new division bench led by Justice Mantha and Justice Chattopadhayay.
On the morning of August 9, 2024, the lifeless body of a junior doctor from Kolkata's state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, the victim of a horrific rape and murder, was found in a seminar hall within the hospital grounds.
A trial court in Kolkata subsequently convicted the sole perpetrator, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer for Kolkata Police, sentencing him to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family expressed dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)’s findings, particularly regarding the identification of Roy as the only convict, prompting them to seek recourse from the Calcutta High Court.
They also requested a swift hearing of the case.
Meanwhile, the CBI is actively pursuing investigations into a potential larger conspiracy behind this brutal crime and has submitted several progress reports to the trial court.
