Why Wasn’t Noah Schnapp Informed About His Character's Arc in ‘Stranger Things’ New Season?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Nov 29 (NationPress) The creators of “Stranger Things” intentionally chose not to share vital information regarding actor Noah Schnapp's character development in the upcoming season.
Schnapp mentioned that he was not briefed on the plot twist ahead of his fellow cast members because no one “trusted” him with the sensitive details, according to reports from femalefirst.co.uk.
The 21-year-old actor portrays Will Byers, whose mysterious disappearance into the Upside Down initiated the Netflix sci-fi series a decade ago. With the release of the first volume of season five this week, it became evident how intricately linked his character is to Vecna and the demogorgons, as he possesses the ability to channel the villain's powers.
“I remember the scripts being penned the year before, and Shawn Levy, along with several directors, not explicitly telling me anything, as they never seem to trust me with any of the information,” he shared with variety.com.
“However, they advised me to ‘sit tight, be excited, there’s some excellent stuff coming’. I thought, ‘Oh, sure, whatever’. We receive the scripts only about a week before the table reads. I read Episode 4 on the day of the table read because I was determined to know my lines and avoid sounding foolish.
“As I was skimming through it, I reached the end while getting ready in the shower, and I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I burst out of the shower, screaming.”
Schnapp admitted that it required immense self-discipline not to reveal his character's secrets.
“I lived with an assistant named Brooke, and I was like, ‘Brooke! Oh my God, I have powers!’ I wanted to tell everyone I knew. But I had to wait two years for anyone to see it. But it was the coolest thing ever,” he exclaimed.
The show's creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, permitted Schnapp to explore Will's newly acquired powers, and he embraced the opportunity.
“They pretty much left it to me, which was both a challenge and exciting. There’s so much to consider with the Demo-vision — all these supernatural aspects that are entirely new, and there’s no previous reference in the show or real life, so you just have to create it from scratch,” he explained.
“I recall FaceTiming the Duffers to establish how the powers function because later in the season, it’s revealed that they manifest differently than El’s powers. I aimed to convey that in his physicality and the way he extends his hands.
“One of the most difficult aspects of the season was figuring out how to depict entering the viewpoint of the Demogorgon. How do I show that? And how do I convey that he’s switching channels through the various Demogorgons?”
