Finn Wolfhard felt 'really lost' after Stranger Things ended
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Finn Wolfhard, the 23-year-old Canadian actor best known for playing Mike Wheeler in Netflix's Stranger Things, has opened up about the emotional aftermath of the show's conclusion, saying he felt 'really lost' once filming wrapped on the beloved series.
The Emotional Fallout of Saying Goodbye
Speaking to The Guardian, Wolfhard described the disorientation that followed the end of a show that had defined much of his formative years. 'At first I felt really lost, because that's your life for so long and so many of the crew and cast were so integral to the person that you are and to your identity,' he said.
He compared the experience to a kind of withdrawal. 'You almost have a kind of withdrawal for a little while. Then you realise all those relationships, all those friendships, they're around forever,' he added.
Life on Set Was Like School
Wolfhard described the Stranger Things set — based primarily in Atlanta — as an unconventional but deeply formative community. 'Every year it was like, OK, I know I'm going to be in Atlanta filming this thing with the same people for the next however long. It was like my school in a really odd way. Everyone was having a great time, hanging out. All the cast lived in the same neighbourhood. We would go to each other's houses all the time,' he recalled.
The close-knit nature of the production meant that the reality of its ending crept up on the cast gradually. 'The vibe (during the last season) was almost like, 'Oh, we'll be back next year', but once we got about halfway through, everyone started to realise like, 'Oh. This is it'. And then everyone just really valued the time we all had together for that last half,' he said.
Why the Ending Felt Right
Despite the emotional weight of the finale, Wolfhard says the show ended at the right moment. 'It was pretty depressing for everyone when it ended … but it feels absolutely right that we've ended at the time that we did,' he told The Guardian.
The Stranger Things saga concluded after its fifth and final season, a planned ending that the cast and creators had long acknowledged. Notably, the show's conclusion was widely anticipated, yet that foreknowledge did little to soften the blow for those who had spent years together on set.
What Wolfhard Is Doing Now
The actor says he has found a new sense of freedom since the show ended, with his focus now shifting to his music career. He described the creative latitude that comes with music as something he is actively embracing. The transition marks a significant chapter for Wolfhard, who rose to global fame as a teenager and has spent most of his adult life under the Stranger Things banner.
As he steps into this next phase, Wolfhard appears to have made peace with the ending — grounded, by his own account, in the lasting bonds forged on set.
