Odisha Assembly Sessions Disrupted by Opposition's LPG Price Protests
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 12 (NationPress) Opposition representatives from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress caused a significant disruption in the Odisha Assembly on Thursday as they protested against the recent increase in LPG cylinder prices and the ongoing shortage of cooking gas in the state.
As the Question Hour commenced, Congress members gathered near the podium of Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy, brandishing placards and chanting slogans critical of the government regarding the LPG price hike.
Members of the BJD also joined in the noisy protests during the Question Hour, standing at their seats and raising their voices. Despite the Speaker's attempts to maintain order and continue proceedings, the House was ultimately adjourned until 11:30 a.m.
After the House reconvened, opposition members persisted in their ruckus over the LPG price hike, leading Speaker Padhy to adjourn the session first until 12:10 p.m. and then again until 4 p.m.
Speaking to reporters outside the House, senior Congress leader Ashok Das emphasized that the ongoing increases in LPG cylinder prices have severely impacted ordinary citizens and poor families, making it difficult for them to manage daily expenses. He stressed that cooking gas is a fundamental requirement for every household and urged the government to ensure its affordability.
Das stated that the protest was aimed at voicing the concerns of the public and pressuring the government to take immediate action to mitigate rising prices. He called for the restoration of sufficient subsidies on LPG cylinders and for price regulation to support ordinary citizens in their daily lives.
He further accused the “double engine government” of failing to address public grievances, stressing that the cost of living continues to escalate.
BJD leader Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo also addressed the media, asserting that cooking gas is a basic necessity not just for households but also for restaurants and small businesses. He claimed that people are struggling due to soaring prices and supply concerns, insisting that the government must guarantee a steady supply of LPG cylinders to ensure uninterrupted kitchen operations throughout the state.
According to him, the ongoing supply issues and rising prices are causing distress among average consumers and small businesses reliant on LPG for their day-to-day functions. Singh Deo characterized the current situation as a reflection of administrative failure and urged the government to take swift action to stabilize the supply and keep essential goods available for the public.
In contrast, BJP MLA Irasis Acharya criticized the opposition for their repeated disruptions in the Odisha Legislative Assembly regarding the LPG matter, suggesting that the issue could have been addressed through structured discussions within the House.
He pointed out that the opposition had opportunities during Question Hour and Zero Hour to voice their concerns about LPG supply and pricing in a more organized manner.
Acharya also highlighted the Central Government's initiatives aimed at expanding LPG access across the nation, particularly for economically disadvantaged households, noting that various measures have been implemented to ensure cooking gas connections reach the underprivileged and to enhance supply chains.
