Bhubaneswar, March 11 (NationPress) Members of the women, youth, and student factions of the opposition party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha held a protest at Master Canteen Square on Wednesday to voice their discontent over the recent surge in LPG cylinder costs and essential commodities.
The protest was organized by the Biju Mahila Janata Dal, Biju Yuba Janata Dal, and Biju Chatra Janata Dal, with participants symbolically brewing tea on traditional earthen stoves to emphasize the financial strain rising cooking fuel prices are placing on households.
Senior BJD leader Dr. Lekhasri Samantsinghar criticized the Central government for the steep increase in LPG cylinder prices and other essential items.
She pointed out that domestic LPG cylinder prices have risen by approximately Rs 60, while commercial cylinders have gone up by Rs 119. Concurrently, the price of cooking oil has soared to nearly Rs 170 per litre, further exacerbating the financial challenges faced by average households.
Dr. Samantsinghar argued that the current situation reflects a lack of a robust economic and energy security policy at the national level. She stated that if domestic prices are heavily influenced by international events, it underscores the government's failure to provide adequate safeguards for essential supplies in the country.
She noted that in the past, when global oil prices dropped, the government did not significantly lower LPG and other commodity prices. Conversely, any increase in international prices is swiftly transferred onto the public.
“It is the duty of the elected government to ensure food security, price stability, and economic protection for the populace, yet the Centre has neglected these critical issues,” she emphasized.
BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra remarked on Wednesday that the protests at Master Canteen in Bhubaneswar aim to highlight the burden of rising fuel costs on everyday families.
Patra also questioned the Odisha government's response, asserting that as a member of a “double engine government,” it should clarify what measures are being implemented to shield citizens from escalating prices.
He urged the government to provide clear information regarding the availability of petroleum products and cooking gas, noting that LPG has a direct impact on household kitchens.
