New Delhi, Aug 18 (NationPress) The Lok Sabha was adjourned until noon on Monday due to intense sloganeering and protests from Opposition members who were demanding a discourse on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
The disruption commenced shortly after Speaker Om Birla opened the proceedings for Question Hour, marking the first session following a holiday break.
As the House convened at 11 a.m., Speaker Birla started calling out the names of members set to pose questions. However, Opposition MPs flooded into the Well of the House, chanting slogans and waving placards.
In a strong appeal, Birla called on the protesting members to redirect their energy towards asking questions that would serve the public good.
“Instead of raising slogans, pose your questions with equal fervor. This will lead to public welfare,” he stated.
Speaker Birla also delivered a serious warning against any attempts to damage public property, reminding members that similar actions in state Assemblies had led to disciplinary actions.
“The citizens of this country are observing your conduct,” he cautioned before adjourning the House until noon.
Despite the uproar, several questions were briefly discussed prior to the adjournment.
DMK's Arun Nehru inquired about sector-wise investments through Sovereign Wealth Funds and global pension funds.
Samajwadi Party's Zia Ur Rehman expressed concerns regarding the increasing fiscal deficit and inflation amid global uncertainties.
JD(U)'s Dr Alok Kumar Suman questioned the government's initiatives for a nationwide school safety audit.
BJP's Vishnu Datt Sharma asked about pending road construction projects in Madhya Pradesh due to delays in forest clearance.
DMK's TR Baalu proposed greater tax exemptions for senior citizens aged 70 and above, while TDP's Dr Byreddy Shabari inquired about internship opportunities under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme in Andhra Pradesh.
Nonetheless, the uproar in the House drowned out both the questions and the answers.
This adjournment highlights ongoing tensions in Parliament, with the Opposition insisting on accountability regarding electoral processes ahead of pivotal state elections.
Speaker Om Birla reaffirmed his readiness to facilitate discussions after Question Hour, but stressed that proceedings must adhere to democratic standards and decorum.
