Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Jan 22 (NationPress) AIMIM President and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has called upon External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar to take immediate action for the rescue of 16 Indian citizens stranded at the Myanmar-Thailand border.
Owaisi shared a troubling message on the social media platform ‘X’ indicating that he had received distressing news from an individual being held captive.
“A total of 16 Indian nationals, three of whom hail from Hyderabad, were lured with promises of employment in Thailand but were taken to the Myanmar-Thailand border and subjected to enslavement. They are forced to endure 18-20 hours of labor daily, face physical punishment, and are stripped of their passports, phones, and access to medical care,” the MP wrote.
He urgently appealed to the EAM to act swiftly to facilitate the rescue of all stranded Indians.
“This information comes from Mir Sajjad Ali, a local from Osman Nagar, Hyderabad, who is currently detained at the Myanmar-Thailand border. Two others accompanying him are from Maula Ali and Banjara Hills,” Owaisi stated.
Last year, India successfully repatriated over 1,500 citizens from Thailand via special flights.
The returnees were victims of organized cyber fraud schemes, which misled them with the promise of lucrative employment. They were subsequently captured and coerced into participating in illegal online activities.
In November of last year, 11 individuals from Telangana were rescued from Thailand, part of a total of 270 Indian nationals brought back.
These individuals had escaped to Thailand following a military operation on cybercrime hubs in Myanmar.
Additionally, another group of 55 individuals from the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh was rescued from these cybercrime locations in Myanmar, contributing to a total of 370 Indian nationals repatriated from Thailand.
All 55 individuals originated from Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.
Due to their mobile phones being confiscated in Myanmar and lacking funds, the repatriates received assistance from the Andhra Pradesh government upon their return to India.
The Andhra Pradesh government effectively aided 79 individuals rescued from the Myanmar cybercrime network in reaching their homes.
Previously, 24 individuals from various regions of Andhra Pradesh were also part of the repatriated Indians from Thailand.
