New Delhi, Nov 10 (NationPress) Former Australian Test captain Tim Paine is advocating for Cameron Green to be included in the playing XI over Beau Webster for the opening Ashes Test in Perth, which begins on November 21.
Both all-rounders featured in recent matches during the West Indies tour and the World Test Championship Final, but Green primarily played as a batsman due to his recovery from back surgery.
With Green ramping up his bowling practice in preparation for the first Test, Paine confidently believes he should be preferred over Webster if Australia opts for just one all-rounder against England.
While Webster has shown consistent performance in his last seven Tests for Australia, Paine asserts that Green's potential is simply too significant to ignore.
Paine expressed his views on the SEN Tassie Breakfast program, mentioning that Green has the capability to outperform Webster, stating, “I don't find it staggering and I don’t think anyone should find it staggering. I try to select teams and coach teams optimistically and say right, ‘If this guy's playing at his absolute best, what does that look like?’.”
“If you were completely honest, and we love Slug, but if you’re choosing between him and Cameron Green as the all-rounder while both are fit, I think you’d still go with Cameron Green right now.”
“Slug has risen from being the third or fourth all-rounder in Australia to applying pressure on Cam Green for his position, which is an impressive feat in just 18 months to have this conversation. If Cameron Green doesn’t perform, there’s someone ready to step in.”
Despite it being a challenging decision for Webster, who has delivered commendable performances, Paine believes it reflects the strength of the all-rounder position in the Australian team, with multiple capable players available.
“Cameron Green is a potential generational talent; he can significantly change the dynamics of your team, but he must deliver on the field if selected. He’s still young and improving, and that’s not to downplay Slug’s growth.”
“Slug’s dedication over the past 12 to 18 months has been commendable, and his consistent performances for Tasmania merit his current standing. However, he’s competing against a serious player in Green. It’s a positive situation for Australia; if Cam Green isn’t able to bowl, we have Beau Webster, who has averaged 35 with the bat and 23 with the ball in the chances he’s received, making it a tough choice to exclude him.”
The first Ashes Test is set to kick off on November 21.
