New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has raised his eyebrows regarding the Ashes selection decisions, expressing confusion over the choice of Josh Inglis over Beau Webster during the series. Despite an impressive start to his Test career, which included a match-winning debut performance in last year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy finale, Webster was not included in Australia’s starting XI for the Ashes opener in Perth, with fellow all-rounder Cameron Green taking his place at No. 6.
The 32-year-old was also overlooked for the subsequent Tests in Brisbane and Adelaide, as the selectors opted for reserve wicketkeeper Inglis, who managed scores of 23, 32, and 10 while batting at No. 7.
Webster eventually made his mark in the New Year’s Ashes Test at the SCG, scoring an unbeaten 71 and taking three wickets with his part-time off-spin.
“Initially, I was surprised by their decision to choose Inglis over Beau. I understand that selectors delve deeply into data for these choices. There must have been some statistical justification; perhaps Inglis had superior metrics. However, I honestly can’t comprehend their reasoning,” Ponting remarked on SEN Tassie.
Ponting emphasized that the decision was perplexing, particularly considering Webster’s form and potential to enhance the team’s balance. He felt the selectors missed a significant opportunity by not including him throughout the Ashes.
“I was taken aback, but every time Beau plays, he consistently makes a strong case for his inclusion. With Usman Khawaja absent, there’s now a chance for him at No. 5. I can’t envision a scenario where Travis Head doesn’t continue as an opener, so perhaps it’s Beau’s opportunity to seize that No. 5 position.
“He may not be the flashiest player, but he’s a competitor. He understands what needs to be done in various situations, whether with the ball or in the field. Moving forward, it will be challenging to exclude him,” Ponting added.
Recently, Webster expressed his “disappointment” at not being selected for the first four Tests of the Ashes series.
