Chennai, Nov 12 (NationPress) AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has vehemently criticized the detention of 14 fishermen from Tamil Nadu by the Sri Lankan Navy, describing it as an inhumane and unlawful act that highlights the ongoing struggles faced by Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait. He has called on the Centre to step in urgently to facilitate their release.
In a statement shared on X, Palaniswami emphasized that this incident is yet another instance of the persistent harassment faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen, who frequently find themselves attacked and detained by Sri Lankan authorities while engaged in traditional fishing activities in open waters.
On November 8, 2025, a group of 14 fishermen — including 12 from Vanagiri Panchayat in Poompuhar constituency of Mayiladuthurai district and two from Vasanakuppam village near Tharangambadi in Cuddalore district — set out to fish in a mechanized boat owned by a local man named Ramayanam.
Due to adverse weather conditions, the boat reportedly veered off course and inadvertently entered Sri Lankan territorial waters.
On November 9, the Sri Lankan Navy intercepted the vessel and detained all 14 fishermen, despite their pleas for assistance and explanations that they had unintentionally crossed into their waters after their boat was compromised.
Palaniswami accused the Sri Lankan forces of demonstrating a complete disregard for humanity by neglecting to assist and instead unlawfully detaining the fishermen.
“The Sri Lankan government must immediately cease these brutal actions. I call upon both the Central and State governments to intervene decisively to ensure their release,” he stated.
The AIADMK leader further urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide immediate financial and humanitarian support to the families of the detained fishermen, highlighting that such arrests have instilled a sense of fear and economic instability within coastal communities.
“Our fishermen long for a day when they can fish freely and securely in deep waters. When their lives and livelihoods are perpetually threatened, it becomes unbearable to continue their traditional occupation,” Palaniswami added, advocating for strong diplomatic measures by the Centre to safeguard the rights and safety of Tamil Nadu’s fishermen.
