Bengaluru, Feb 25 (NationPress) In the midst of the ongoing power struggle within the Congress party, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara asserted that there is nothing inappropriate about his supporters advocating for him to assume the Chief Minister’s role. He confidently stated that he has demonstrated his capabilities unequivocally.
This assertion was made during his interaction with journalists in Bengaluru on Wednesday. When questioned regarding calls for his elevation in light of potential leadership changes, given his Dalit background and his tenure as State Congress President on two occasions, Parameshwara remarked, “If there is a problem with this, please let me know, and I will address it.”
“I have consistently emphasized that such matters should not be aired in public. Discussions regarding the selection or replacement of the Chief Minister will occur in private meetings led by the high command. Inputs must be gathered during the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meetings,” he explained.
“After careful consideration, the high command will make a definitive choice. This is the protocol within our party, and I have reiterated this numerous times. While my name may be suggested, mere nominations or expressions of opinion will not alter the situation. Nonetheless, no one can claim that such demands are unjustified,” he added.
The minister identified himself as a committed member of the party, stating, “I will respect the high command's decision. If I were to declare publicly that I should be the Chief Minister, would that make it happen? Such statements would only provoke public discourse. The final decision rests with the high command.”
Addressing his supporters' claims about his abilities, Parameshwara stated, “How many times must I validate my competence? I collaborated with the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) for eight years. Could I have achieved that without skill? I was instrumental in securing the party's victories on two occasions. Would that have been feasible if I lacked capability?”
“Additionally, I have served as Deputy Chief Minister of the state. Can anyone occupy such a position without competence? My capabilities are beyond question. However, decisions are contingent on circumstances and the party leadership,” he clarified.
He also noted that he had not interacted with Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi or former Minister K.N. Rajanna and was unaware of their discussions.
In response to Rajanna's comments regarding his deserving recognition for hard work, he stated, “That is precisely why I questioned what is wrong with such a demand.”
When asked about his travel plans to Delhi, Parameshwara replied, “Delhi is familiar territory for me. I travel there whenever necessary without needing permission. I manage educational institutions and have engaged with bodies such as the UGC and other authorities. If there is official business concerning the police department, I will issue an official statement and proceed accordingly,” he indicated.
“If I believe there is a need to engage in political discussions with the high command, I will certainly make the trip. Having served on the party's working committee, I am acquainted with the leaders there. If I wish to meet Rahul Gandhi or Sonia Gandhi, I will go to Delhi based on their availability. Similarly, I will meet AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge whenever he is in Bengaluru,” he concluded.
