Patna Police arrest 158 in crackdown; liquor, drugs, weapons seized
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna Police conducted a sweeping district-wide special operation on 16 July under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya K. Sharma, resulting in the arrest of 158 accused across multiple police station areas in Patna, Bihar. All those arrested have since been remanded to judicial custody.
Key Developments
The coordinated raids were executed simultaneously across police station jurisdictions including Maner, Ramkrishna Nagar, Agamkuan, Fatuha, Pachmahla, Malsalami, and Bikram. According to the SSP, those detained were wanted in connection with a range of serious offences — among them two murder cases, 21 attempted murder cases, one case involving an attack on a police team, 22 liquor smuggling cases, and offences under the SC/ST Act.
Liquor, Drugs and Weapons Recovered
In line with Bihar's stringent prohibition law, police seized 2,438.05 litres of illicit liquor, comprising 1,726.05 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and 712 litres of country-made liquor. The operation also led to the recovery of 377 grams of cannabis and 11 grams of smack (heroin).
Searches at various locations yielded two firearms, four live cartridges, one magazine, and three spent cartridges. Additionally, police impounded seven vehicles allegedly used for smuggling, along with nine mobile phones and ₹15,010 in cash.
Warrants Executed Against Absconding Accused
Beyond arrests and seizures, the drive placed significant emphasis on clearing a backlog of pending court orders. Police successfully executed 164 warrants in total — 56 bailable warrants, 94 non-bailable warrants, and 14 property attachment warrants — targeting individuals who had long evaded the law.
What the SSP Said
SSP Kartikeya K. Sharma stated that the special drive is part of Patna Police's sustained effort to maintain public order, dismantle organised crime networks, and enforce Bihar's prohibition law strictly. He emphasised that similar operations will continue in the days ahead, and appealed to residents to promptly report criminal activity or illegal liquor operations in their localities so that timely action can be taken.
Broader Context
Bihar has maintained a total prohibition on alcohol since 2016, when the state government enacted the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act. Despite the ban, illicit liquor networks have persisted, prompting periodic crackdowns by district police. This operation is notable for its scale — combining targeted arrests of wanted criminals, narcotics seizures, weapons recovery, and warrant execution in a single coordinated drive, signalling a multi-pronged enforcement approach by the Patna Police.
