Kolkata, December 1 (NationPress) A public interest litigation has been submitted to a division bench led by Calcutta High Court’s Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul, contesting the declaration made by rebel Trinamool Congress MLA from Bharatpur in Murshidabad district, Humayun Kabir, regarding plans to construct a Babri Mosque in the district, modeled after the original structure in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.
Kabir has also stated that he intends to lay the foundation stone for the mosque on December 6—the anniversary of the Babri Mosque demolition in Ayodhya in 1992.
The division bench led by Justice Paul previously instructed the petitioner, Sabyasachi Chattopadhyay, a senior counsel at the Calcutta High Court, to formally proceed with the PIL according to legal guidelines.
The date for the initial hearing has not yet been announced.
In his petition, Chattopadhyay contends that Kabir's announcements and provocative remarks could disrupt the communal harmony within the state. He has requested the Calcutta High Court's intervention to avert any possible law-and-order issues.
Controversy has intensified around the land in Beldanga, Murshidabad, which Kabir designated as the site for the mosque.
The landowner, a farmer in Murshidabad, has publicly asserted that he will neither sell the land nor permit the construction of a Babri Masjid on it.
Additionally, he has constructed a boundary wall around the property. Kabir, however, issued a defiant statement, claiming he would “give his life” to ensure the mosque is built if necessary.
“There are numerous locations in Beldanga. The foundation stone for the Babri Mosque will be laid on December 6. No force can prevent this. The responsibility for maintaining law and order in the district does not rest solely on my shoulders. If needed, there will be a confrontation,” Kabir stated last week.
He also expressed frustration that fellow Trinamool MLAs Hasanuzzaman Sk and Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, representing Beldanga and Rejinagar constituencies respectively, are not supporting him in the mosque construction project.
