The Rajya Sabha MP expressed to IANS that PM Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit in Canada is paving the way for new beginnings in diplomatic relations, marking a significant revival in Indo-Canadian ties.
Sandhu highlighted that the Indian diaspora, particularly numerous Sikh organizations, have warmly welcomed PM Modi in Canada, applauding his statesman-like qualities.
He stated, “India and Canada have historically shared strong bonds over three critical areas: the presence of the Indian diaspora, trade relations, and educational exchanges. These aspects have suffered due to recent tensions, but PM Modi’s visit is poised to inject fresh energy into these ties.”
He mentioned receiving numerous calls from Indians residing in Canada, all expressing their excitement and celebratory spirit during PM Modi’s trip.
“They all acknowledged that PM Modi's willingness to visit Canada amid strained relations displayed his big-heartedness and true statesmanship. He prioritized the people’s needs over political tensions,” Sandhu remarked, reflecting the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada.
“The earlier tensions were adversely affecting these vital areas. Now, with the Prime Minister's visit, there is a sense of joy and celebration among the people,” he told IANS.
Discussing trade, he noted that the two nations engage in approximately $9 billion worth of trade across various sectors, with around 7 million people traveling between these two distant nations each year.
Sandhu emphasized that PM Modi’s visit has fostered fresh optimism for collaboration on numerous issues, including artificial intelligence, technology, digital infrastructure, and tackling climate challenges.
