New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday characterized the Godhra incident as a tragedy of unimaginable magnitude, where individuals were burnt alive, and compared the outrage surrounding it to the global reaction following 9/11.

In a discussion with US-based podcaster and AI researcher Lex Fridman, PM Modi suggested that the Gujarat riots of 2002 were, in some way, associated with the tense and unstable atmosphere that arose after the tragic event on February 27, 2002, which resulted in the death of 59 individuals, including women and children, due to the Godhra train burning.

“That one tragic incident in 2002 became a catalyst for violence,” he stated.

When asked about the riots, PM Modi remarked, “You can visualize, against the backdrop of incidents like the Kandahar hijacking, the attack on parliament, or even 9/11, and then witnessing so many people being killed and burnt alive, you can understand how tense and volatile the situation was. Naturally, this was tragic for all. Everyone desires peace.”

Recalling the moment when news of the Godhra incident broke, he said, “We were gathered in the Assembly for the budget session. It was just three days since I had assumed my role as a state representative when the horrific Godhra incident unfolded. It was a tragedy of unimaginable magnitude, as people were burnt alive.”

Addressing the tense circumstances leading to the communal outbreak, PM Modi noted, “Within merely eight to ten months, several major global terrorist attacks occurred, resulting in violence and the loss of innocent lives. In such a tense atmosphere, even the tiniest spark can ignite unrest. The situation had already grown extremely volatile. During such times, unexpectedly, on October 7th, 2001, I was entrusted with the challenge of becoming the chief minister of Gujarat.”

A few months prior, PM Modi had commended the film ‘The Sabarmati Report’ for accurately portraying the truth regarding the Godhra train burning in 2002, praising it for revealing the truth.

The film narrates the incident of a violent mob setting the S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express ablaze at the Godhra railway station in Gujarat.
