The Prime Minister will attend a grand ceremony marking the 1,000th anniversary of Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I’s victory over the Gangetic plains.

He will arrive in Tiruchi from Thoothukudi on Saturday night and will stay overnight before departing for Gangaikondacholapuram via helicopter on Sunday morning.

More than 1,000 police personnel will be stationed at Tiruchi airport and its vicinity, while approximately 2,000 officers from Ariyalur and neighboring central zone districts will oversee crowd and traffic management at the event location and along the access routes.

An Advanced Security Liaison (ASL) session was held at Tiruchi airport on Wednesday, organized by the Special Protection Group (SPG) with involvement from city law enforcement, security agencies, and airport officials.

A follow-up ASL meeting is set for Thursday at Gangaikondacholapuram, where the Ariyalur District Collector, the Central Zone Inspector-General of Police, and senior authorities will be present.

A helipad has been constructed near the venue to accommodate the Prime Minister’s aerial entry.

Anti-sabotage teams will be deployed, and a multi-layered security approach will be in effect in Tiruchi and Gangaikondacholapuram throughout the weekend.

This marks Prime Minister Modi’s initial visit to the Ariyalur district.

At Gangaikondacholapuram, he will offer prayers at the globally recognized Brihadisvara temple before participating in the commemorative gathering organized by the Union Ministry of Culture.

The event also signifies the closure of the Aadi Thiruvadhirai festival, which spans from July 23 to 27. Noteworthy highlights of the ceremony include the launch of a booklet on Thevaram hymns released by the Sahitya Akademi, a Bharatanatyam performance by Kalakshetra artists, Thevaram chanting, and a special musical concert featuring Ilaiyaraaja and his ensemble.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will offer thematic exhibitions centered on Chola Shaivism and temple architecture and will organize heritage walks and guided tours to highlight the historical importance of the temple and its architect, Rajendra Chola I.
