Srinagar, May 26 (NationPress) On Monday, authorities apprehended a drug peddler and seized narcotic substances from him in the Kupwara border district of Jammu and Kashmir.
As part of its relentless effort against drug trafficking and its detrimental effects on society, Kupwara Police detained a drug dealer during a ‘Naka’ (checkpoint) operation, marking a significant setback for the drug issue in the area,” stated the police.
A police team from Police Post Bazar, under the guidance of senior officials, had set up a checkpoint at Geerhatchi as part of routine surveillance and anti-drug initiatives. During the checkpoint inspection, a suspicious figure approaching from Zangli towards Kupwara attempted to evade the checkpoint. However, the vigilant naka team acted promptly and apprehended the individual before he could escape. Upon initial questioning, he identified himself as Faisal Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Kupwara. A subsequent search revealed a heroin-like substance in his possession,” the statement detailed.
Initial investigations indicate that the suspect was actively engaged in the distribution and supply of narcotics, particularly targeting the youth in Kupwara town and the Hyhama area, contributing to the alarming rise in drug abuse in the region.
Consequently, a case has been registered under FIR No. 149/2025 U/S 8/21 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Kupwara, and a comprehensive investigation is underway to expose the larger network involved,” reported the police.
The arrest is seen as a significant relief for the local community, especially parents and families alarmed by the increasing drug abuse among the youth. The Kupwara Police remains steadfast in its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking,” officials affirmed.
It’s important to note that the J&K Police and security forces have initiated a vigorous campaign against drug smugglers and peddlers, as investigations have traced the roots of drug smuggling back across the border to Pakistan.
Security personnel and intelligence agencies suspect that profits from hawala rackets and drug smuggling ultimately fund terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
