New Delhi, May 29 (NationPress) Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is advocating for the inclusion of left-arm fast-bowler Arshdeep Singh in India's lineup for their forthcoming Test series against England, which kicks off on June 20 in Leeds.
Arshdeep has established himself as a key player in India's T20I squad, securing 99 wickets in just 63 matches. In first-class cricket, he has taken 66 wickets across 21 games. Ponting has closely observed Arshdeep's skills, having coached him at Punjab Kings, who are set to compete against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025.
“I've had a great opportunity to understand him well. He’s a wonderful personality to have on the team. He brings a sense of fun and is very relaxed around the group,” Ponting stated on The ICC Review show.
“When the Test squad was announced, I was quick to recognize Arshdeep's selection during our team meeting and congratulated him in front of everyone.”
“He truly deserves this opportunity. I believe he will perform admirably in England. I would start him in the Test team because he possesses remarkable skills, and the Duke's ball will benefit him in the UK. Having a left-arm bowler in the team would be a strategic advantage, and it would surprise me if India overlooks this,” added the former Australian captain.
Arshdeep also participated in the County Championship with Kent in 2023, where he claimed 13 wickets in five matches, with his best performance being 3-58. “He has experience in county cricket and understands the conditions well,” Ponting noted.
“Standing close to six-foot-four, he generates decent bounce... as we know, the ball continues to swing even after 30, 40, or 50 overs. Having a bowler with swing capabilities and a left-arm angle is something that the Indian team should definitely consider for this tour.”
When asked about his strategy for leading PBKS to the playoffs for the first time since 2014 during his debut season as coach, the legendary Australian cricketer shared the three principles he instilled in the franchise: “Being different, daring, and dynamic.”
“This philosophy extends beyond just the players; it involves the entire organization. Inclusion is crucial for me. We have more than just 25 players; we have over 100 individuals on this shared journey. Ensuring everyone feels part of this journey is vital to our success,” he added.
“The qualifying rounds are concluding, and the most exciting part is yet to come, but cricket has been exhilarating so far. It's been a pleasure to be part of this team, and I look forward to what lies ahead in the coming weeks,” he concluded.
