New Delhi, Oct 30 (NationPress) Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has expressed that pacer Arshdeep Singh, who was absent in the T20I series opener held in Canberra, is unlikely to be included in the playing XI for the upcoming second T20I against Australia on Friday.
Arshdeep was not selected for the opening match as Harshit Rana was preferred, alongside pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and pace-bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube. The 26-year-old Punjab pacer participated in the ODI series, playing in the first two matches before being sidelined for the final ODI in Sydney. He managed to take only three wickets across those two games.
On the subject of Arshdeep potentially appearing in the playing XI for the second T20I in Melbourne, Patel remarked during JioStar’s ‘Cricket Live’, “Considering the current strategic direction and selection approach of the Indian team management, I genuinely don’t foresee Arshdeep Singh being part of the playing XI for the second T20 International in Melbourne.”
“This viewpoint arises from the evident preference for incorporating two wrist-spin bowling options to effectively manage the critical middle overs, along with the essential need for a reliable batsman at the number eight position who can deliver significant runs in the lower order – a role that Harshit Rana seems set to fulfill according to the team’s current arrangement. While the team’s strategists will undoubtedly need to find a way to integrate Arshdeep into the lineup in upcoming matches, considering his undeniable talent and capabilities, I simply can’t picture him joining the final team setup for this specific match in Melbourne,” he added.
The former cricketer also highlighted the key positives for India as they head into the second match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
“There were numerous promising indicators for India, beginning with the opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill. Despite Abhishek falling early, his aggressive style illustrated his dedication to his natural game, even while playing in Australia for the first time. Captain Suryakumar Yadav spending time at the crease will greatly enhance his confidence, as we observed his signature shots like the flicks and scoops that characterize his vintage form. Both Shubman and Surya, batting with impressive strike rates, were vital for India, particularly in a rain-affected nine-over contest. Their performance leading into the Melbourne match is a positive sign for the team,” Patel stated.
