Dubai, Feb 18 (NationPress) The recent injury to pace leader Jasprit Bumrah has shaken India’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy. However, former Australian captain and ICC Hall of Famer Ricky Ponting has expressed strong support for Arshdeep Singh as the perfect substitute.

During an episode of The ICC Review, Ponting shared his belief in Arshdeep’s capability to step in for Bumrah, highlighting the young bowler’s proficiency with both the new ball and in the final overs as vital strengths.

“I would opt for the left-armer and I’d choose Arshdeep (to take Bumrah's place),” Ponting stated. “His outstanding performance in T20 cricket is noteworthy, and considering his skill set, he likely offers similar advantages to what Bumrah does with the new ball and in death overs. That’s what India will miss,” he added.

Ponting recognized Harshit Rana’s commendable displays in India’s recent ODI triumph against England but stressed that Arshdeep’s left-arm variation and ability to swing the ball make him a more suitable choice.

“That’s not to undermine Harshit Rana, as he has significant talent and we are aware of his capabilities with the new ball,” Ponting clarified. “But I don’t believe his death bowling skills match those of Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm variation and the ability to swing the new ball is essential in major tournaments, especially with numerous right-handers at the top of the order.”

India still has various alternatives within their squad, including Mohammed Shami and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who is anticipated to help mitigate the effects of Bumrah’s absence. Ponting also mentioned the potential influence of mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

“I believe Chakravarthy can significantly impact the tournament for India,” he noted. “He’s often seen primarily as a T20 bowler, but his variations and skills could make him a game-changer in the Champions Trophy.”

Despite the setback with Bumrah’s injury, Ponting remains hopeful about India’s chances for the title. He pointed to the team’s recent 4-1 series win over England as an indication of their strong form as they head into the tournament.

“Winning becomes a habit, and having that momentum can provide some confidence,” he said. “More crucially for India, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back to scoring runs, which is vital for success in major tournaments. Experienced players must perform in critical moments.”

India is set to face Bangladesh in their opening match in Dubai on February 20.
