Madhya Pradesh Power Tariffs Increase by 4.8%: A Relief Compared to Discoms' Proposal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, March 26 (NationPress) Electricity costs are slated to rise in Madhya Pradesh as the MP Electricity Regulatory Commission has unveiled a modest increase in power tariffs for the fiscal year 2026–27.
In a tariff order released on Thursday, the Commission sanctioned an average increase of 4.8 percent, which is substantially less than the 10.19 percent hike proposed by electricity distribution companies.
"It is important to note that in the true-up for FY 2024-25, the petitioner claimed a revenue shortfall of Rs 7,815.27 crore, which included supplementary power purchase bills dating from FY 2014-15 to FY 2022-23. However, the Commission, after a careful review of the claim and considering stakeholder feedback, has approved a revenue gap of Rs 6,963.27 crore," stated the order.
This decision is perceived as a balanced measure to provide consumers some relief while still addressing the financial requirements of power utilities.
Electricity providers had requested a significant rate adjustment, citing rising costs and operational expenditures.
Yet, following a thorough review, the Regulatory Commission opted to restrict the overall tariff increase to 4.8 percent.
This tempered hike is anticipated to lessen the financial strain on households and businesses throughout the state. In a notable relief initiative, the Commission has exempted certain categories from any tariff hike.
Domestic consumers from the low-income category under LT4 will continue to pay existing rates without any increase. Likewise, there will be no adjustment in tariffs for the Metro Rail category under LT9.
These decisions are set to benefit a significant number of economically disadvantaged consumers and essential services. The new tariff order also introduces several consumer-friendly modifications. Minimum charges have been abolished for various consumer categories.
The Commission has retained kWh-based billing for High Tension and Extra High Tension consumers. Rebates for night-time electricity use will persist as previously established.
Consumers are also enjoying relief in metering charges.
Incentives for online bill payments and punctuality in bill payments remain unchanged. Similarly, incentives related to power factor and load factor are still intact.
Additionally, the Commission has initiated several programs to promote energy efficiency and green energy.
A rebate of up to 20 percent has been announced for smart meter users during off-peak hours. The green tariff has been reduced to encourage greater adoption of renewable energy sources.
Moreover, the additional surcharge on open access consumers has been decreased.
