Madhya Pradesh Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya on Sunday, 26 July revealed that former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had offered to step down from the very first day of the nationwide student protests over paper leaks, telling party leadership he would resign immediately if they deemed it necessary. Speaking to reporters in Indore, Vijayvargiya praised Pradhan's conduct as a model of political accountability.

What Vijayvargiya Said About Pradhan

'I have known Dharmendra Pradhan for many years. He performs every responsibility with complete dedication. From the very first day of the movement, he told the party leadership, ‘If you feel that I should resign, I will do so.’ However, the party president told him that the decision would be taken after due discussion. When the situation changed, he submitted his resignation within minutes,' Vijayvargiya said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader also claimed that Pradhan’s resignation had thwarted the designs of what he described as ‘foreign elements’ seeking to destabilise India. 'His resignation has defeated the intentions of foreign forces that wanted to create chaos in the country on the lines of Nepal and Bangladesh,' he alleged.

Pradhan’s Resignation: Background and Statement

Dharmendra Pradhan tendered his resignation as Union Education Minister on Saturday, 25 July, amid widespread protests demanding accountability over paper leaks and exam irregularities. In his resignation letter, Pradhan reaffirmed his commitment to students and education, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the opportunity to serve.

'For over four decades, I have dedicated myself to the cause of students, teachers, and educational reform. I have always believed that a robust, inclusive, and visionary education system forms the cornerstone of a strong nation,' Pradhan wrote. He added that realising the aspirations of India’s youth had been a ‘moral commitment’ throughout his political and social life.

BJP’s Attack on Congress

Vijayvargiya used the occasion to sharply criticise the Indian National Congress (Congress), alleging the party had no substantive role in the student agitation and was merely opportunistic. 'If a child is born in a neighbour’s house and Congress beats drums over it, what role did they actually play? The students launched the agitation, and Congress merely stood behind them because, after the Bengal elections, the Opposition had become completely demoralised,' he said.

He further alleged that the Opposition found an opening through what he referred to as the ‘Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)’ and chose to back its movement. 'Did any Congress leader face a lathi charge? No one,' he said, dismissing the party’s claims of solidarity with protesting students.

Wider Context: Paper Leak Protests

Pradhan’s exit comes amid a prolonged wave of student protests across India over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including paper leaks. The demonstrations had intensified pressure on the Education Ministry to demonstrate accountability. Notably, this is one of the rare instances of a senior Cabinet minister proactively signalling willingness to resign at the onset of a protest movement, rather than after political pressure peaked.

With Pradhan’s departure, attention now turns to the Centre’s next steps on exam reform and whether a new Education Minister will announce structural changes to the examination oversight framework.
