Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 1 (NationPress) - As a new leadership takes charge at the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, the outgoing interim Chairman and renowned actor Prem Kumar remarked on Saturday that there is nothing unusual about this transition, given that his term has concluded.
"It is the prerogative of the state government to appoint a new team as my tenure has come to an end. There should be no misconceptions that my departure was due to my opinions. I am pleased with my performance in the role," Prem Kumar stated.
His advocacy for the striking ASHA workers had caused tension with the state government, leading to rumors that he was removed because of his stance.
However, speaking to IANS, State Culture and Films Minister Saji Cherian clarified that the duration for those managing the Academy is three years.
"The new team includes Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty as the Chairman. There is no fault to find with Prem Kumar, as his term has simply ended, and it is customary to appoint a new team... that’s the standard procedure, and nothing more," he said.
Cherian noted that the incoming team carries significant responsibilities, including organizing the upcoming International Film Festival of Kerala, a hallmark event for the Kerala government.
Filmmaker Kukku Parameswaran has been named Vice Chairperson, and a governing body of 26 members has been established, featuring notable personalities such as Amal Neerad, Syam Pushkaran, Nikhila Vimal, Sitara Krishnakumar, Sudheer Karamana, and B. Ragesh.
Pookutty’s appointment fills the void left by director Ranjith, who resigned amid controversy related to the Hema Committee report on the Malayalam film industry.
After Ranjith stepped down, Prem Kumar, who had served as Vice Chairman, took on the temporary role.
Upon assuming his new position, Pookutty expressed his joy that this marks the first time someone from the technical field has been appointed as Chairman.
"This is a significant responsibility and a challenge; Kerala's society is known for its debates. Change is inevitable over time, and it will occur here too. I will reach out to the outgoing interim Chairman soon," the Oscar winner stated.
