Was Prem Kumar's Exit from Kerala State Chalchitra Academy a Routine Change?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 14 (NationPress) In an effort to address the uproar regarding Malayalam actor Prem Kumar's departure from his role as the Chairman-in-Charge of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy, State Minister for Culture and Films, Saji Cherian, provided a comprehensive clarification on Saturday. He emphasized that the leadership change was strictly a procedural matter and had no connection to the actor's personal opinions or public remarks.
Minister Cherian's remarks follow a social media statement from Prem Kumar, who voiced his disappointment over what he termed an abrupt exit.
Responding to the concerns, Minister Cherian acknowledged the worries expressed by a notable figure in the film industry and deemed it essential to clarify the situation.
He reiterated that the CPI-M government has always respected the democratic right of artists associated with state institutions to hold independent viewpoints.
"There is no expectation for their opinions to mirror those of the government or the Left Democratic Front," he stated, adding that the state does not pursue a policy of dismissing individuals based on their personal beliefs.
He clarified that the perspectives of poet K. Satchidanandan or Prem Kumar are seen as individual opinions and not justifications for administrative actions.
Detailing the timeline, Minister Cherian explained that Prem Kumar initially held the position of Vice-Chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy and subsequently became the Chairman-in-Charge after filmmaker Ranjith's resignation.
According to Minister Cherian, Prem Kumar's performance was commendable.
"The transition was solely due to the expiration of the Academy's governing body's term, necessitating the formation of a new committee," he added.
Acclaimed sound designer Resul Pookutty has now assumed the role of Chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy, a change that Minister Cherian noted was welcomed by Prem Kumar himself.
"If any misunderstandings occurred in communicating this decision, we will investigate them," the Minister promised, indicating a willingness to engage in dialogue to address any personal grievances.
Minister Cherian expressed that Prem Kumar's artistic contributions and service to the Academy are highly esteemed, aiming to put this matter to rest.
