Chennai, June 16 (NationPress) Over 100 children from Sivananda Saraswathi Sevashram were treated to a mesmerizing animal-free performance by the Gemini Circus in Guduvancheri, all made possible by actor Priyamani and PETA India.
This unique initiative, sponsored by Priyamani, was organized by the animal rights organization to promote cruelty-free entertainment.
The event showcased Gemini Circus’ modern take on traditional circus acts, utilizing lifelike animatronic figures instead of live animals.
In the previous year, Gemini Circus received accolades from PETA India for eliminating live animal shows and adopting technology-based alternatives that are both humane and creative.
“By endorsing animal-free entertainment, we contribute to a more compassionate world for all beings,” stated Priyamani.
“PETA India and I encourage everyone to celebrate this compassionate transformation and support efforts that prioritize animal welfare.”
The children, many of whom had never attended a circus before, were thrilled by the vibrant performances.
A representative from Sivananda Saraswathi Sevashram expressed sincere gratitude: “Our children were ecstatic and enchanted by the magical animal-free performance. We are thankful to Priyamani and PETA India for this exceptional experience that not only entertained but also imparted the significance of kindness towards animals. It’s a memory they will treasure forever.”
Ujjwal Agrain, Senior Policy Advisor at PETA India, commended Priyamani for her support of the initiative.
“Her sponsorship not only brought joy to these children but also highlighted the exciting opportunities presented by modern, animal-free circus entertainment,” he remarked.
“We urge the public to support only those circuses that do not exploit animals for profit.”
Investigations conducted by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and PETA India have consistently reported severe abuse in animal circuses, including physical violence, chronic confinement, and lack of basic needs such as food, water, and medical attention.
Animals are often forced to perform confusing tricks through intimidation and abuse.
Both the AWBI and the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) have recognized that animal-based circuses are inherently cruel and have recommended a nationwide ban on their use.
PETA India has also submitted a petition to the Delhi High Court, seeking the central government’s notification of The Performing Animals (Registration) (Amendment) Rules, 2018, to prohibit animals in circuses.
Priyamani has long been an advocate for animal rights. She previously collaborated with PETA India to promote pet sterilization and donated a life-sized mechanical elephant to a temple in Kochi that vowed not to use real elephants for rituals.
