Kanpur, Feb 25 (NationPress) A large number of students gathered at a technological institute in Kanpur on Wednesday to protest following the tragic death of a final-year BCA student due to a collision with a JCB vehicle. Chanting slogans of “We demand justice,” the students from Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology assembled in significant numbers, creating a tense atmosphere on the campus and necessitating a substantial police presence to uphold order.
The student, identified as Prakhar Singh from Ratanlal Nagar, was severely injured when his motorcycle collided with a JCB during construction activities on campus. He later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.
Upon learning of his passing, hundreds of students rallied on campus, raising their voices in protest. The scene quickly escalated, with reports of broken windows and damaged property surfacing. Law enforcement intervened to manage the escalating situation.
Students accused the college of inadequate safety protocols during the ongoing construction work. In contrast, the college administration asserted that the incident transpired outside the campus grounds.
During the protest, there were instances of heated exchanges and minor altercations between students and police officers. One student remarked, "During the altercation, police alleged that I had attacked them, claiming they had evidence. If that’s true, they should reveal it. We did not harm anyone.”
SDM Sadar Anubhav Singh indicated that students had voiced concerns regarding attendance policies and schedules, which were subsequently addressed by the college administration. He noted that police had been stationed since the morning to maintain control.
DCP West S.M. Qasim Abdi commented on the students’ unrest, mentioning that their agitation stemmed not only from the tragic incident but also encompassed other grievances related to attendance and schedules. He stated that police actions were measured to ensure peace, with no excessive force used, and that normalcy has returned to the campus.
