Will Punjab School Education Board Launch an On-Screen Marking System?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Feb 13 (NationPress) The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) is set to introduce the on-screen marking system for the upcoming March examinations, as announced by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Friday.
He noted that the state aims to be among the first educational boards in India to implement a comprehensive digital evaluation process, representing a significant change in the assessment of answer sheets.
This innovative system will allow educators to review scanned answer sheets using computers, with scores automatically calculated by specialized software, thereby providing quicker and more precise results.
The Minister highlighted that the system has already proven its efficiency.
“The system successfully assessed 23,000 answer sheets with speed and accuracy during the supplementary examinations held in September 2025,” he stated.
Encouraged by these results, the PSEB plans to initiate the on-screen marking method in one subject for the matriculation exams this year, with a gradual rollout in future exams.
Detailing the technical safeguards, Minister Bains explained, “Every page of the newly formatted answer sheet includes a unique QR code for secure scanning and smooth digital processing. Under the On-Screen Marking (OSM) framework, answer sheets are scanned in a secure environment and uploaded to a centralized dashboard for online evaluation, complete with automated total calculations, structured marking criteria, and real-time progress tracking.”
Describing this reform as more than just a technological enhancement, the Education Minister remarked, “It’s not merely an upgrade; it’s a fundamental transformation in how we assess our students’ futures. It guarantees fairness, speed, and precision in examination results.”
PSEB Chairman Amarpal Singh emphasized that students will benefit from quicker result announcements, standardized marking, and complete transparency in the assessment process.
“Our educators will also enjoy a streamlined digital interface that promotes consistency and organized record-keeping,” he added.
The board has finalized all technical and administrative arrangements for the March implementation.
“The On-Screen Marking (OSM) system reflects Punjab’s dedication to its students,” Amarpal Singh concluded.
